James A. McKaneJim McKane is retired living in Waterloo, Ontario. His keen interest in genealogy and family history began about 30 years ago when his father convinced him to become the pedigree keeper for his Lyons Clan Reunion. His family left Ulster circa 1832 to settle near near Brampton, Ontario where Jim was born. Upon completion of high school, he farmed with his father until age 25. After a brief period of factory work, he joined a financial services firm in Toronto as an overdue account collector – quite a jump from the farm. In 2004, he retired as an independent financial advisor being licensed for stocks, bonds, mutual funds and life insurance.

Jim has built a linked database of nearly 250,000 people, over the years, which has been of great assistance to him in tracking his family tree. His keen interest in computers has led him to currently being the webmaster for the McCain DNA Project, the Ulster DNA Project and the Ulster McKane website, as well as his own personal websites. He has a great deal of public speaking experience, has taught many training classes and was quite involved in community services. As a member of the Waterloo-Wellington Genealogical Society, he organized and taught a number of classes on using computers for genealogy. In January 2003, at the age of 62, he was oldest member of a 26-person team to climb Mount Kilimanjaro raising over $200,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In retirement, Jim enjoys genealogy, woodworking as well as travelling with his wife, Suzanne. They summer at their cottage on beautiful Colpoy’s Bay, near Wiarton, Ontario. Jim and Suzanne are extremely proud of their 13 grandchildren.
