John Sydney McCainJohn Sydney McCain III was born on 29 August, 1936 in the Panama Canal Zone. His McCain line moved into Carroll County, Mississippi in the 1830s where they became prominent and successful.  Several members of his family have distinguished themselves by serving in the military.  His father and grandfather were in the US Navy and served with great distinction and achieved the rank of Admiral.  John McCain III graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958, as his father had in 1931.

He served in Vietnam where he was shot down flying a combat mission over enemy territory on 26 October, 1967.  He was severely injured, having broken both arms and his right leg and was tortured by North Vietnamese soldiers, who crushed his shoulder with the butt of a rifle and bayoneted him in his left foot and abdominal area. He was then transported to the Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the infamous Hanoi Hilton.

John McCain was held as a prisoner of war for five and a half years. He retired from the Navy in 1981 as a captain. He received a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart and a Distinguished Flying Cross during his career as a naval officer.

He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and again in 1984. He won the Senate seat vacated by Barry Goldwater from Arizona in 1986.  In the US Congress and in the nation at large, he has risen to a position of leadership and has earned a reputation for being his own man and frank political discourse.
